Geometry that holds at operating temperature
A precision roll should be accurate at the temperature where it operates, not only at the temperature where it is measured.
When a roll is heated during production, thermal expansion can change its profile, cylindricity, and rotational accuracy. Even a roll ground perfectly at room temperature may therefore develop a thermal crown or other geometric deviations under operating conditions.
Hot grinding addresses this challenge by heating the roll to a defined temperature representative of its actual working environment. Once thermally stabilized, the roll is precisely measured and ground to achieve the required geometry under operating conditions.
Neo provides hot grinding for heated calender rolls used in high-precision manufacturing applications, including battery electrode production.
Benefits of Hot Grinding
- Compensation for thermal roll deformation
- Improved geometry at operating temperature
- More uniform roll gap and pressure distribution
- Improved product thickness consistency
- Reduced process corrections and start-up waste
- Optimized performance of heated calender rolls
